Need some help...again!

Hi all. The band has decided to cover a Janice
Joplin version of 'Summertime'. I've managed to get
close on most of the song, but the version the band
has decided to do is slightly different then her
more famous version. The trouble is I can't find any
sort of resource for this version. I can't find tabs
or at least a chord chart. A chord chart would
actually be my preference. I have a sort of chord
chart for Gershwin's version but it is of no help
for this song.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

what exactly is this "slightly different" version. Can't you ask someone in the band to run through the cord changes with you and come up with something everyone likes?

Gar, the guitarists are lost, lol. I have most of it
down. I'm having trouble with the solo parts, as
they seem to be using different chords then the
verses.

what chords are they using? If they don't know themselves, play whatever you want, how will they know if it's wrong??

Oh, and this version is found on YouTube. It's
titled as being Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix,
although it is obviously not Hendrix playing. It's
like her more famous recording, but with a second
guitar with chorus or something going on.

I suppose I could check out her more famous live
version, see if I can figure that out and see if it
works with this version.

Thanks, Terry. I've looked at those but this version
of the song seems to be different. Without a chord
chart, I can't really tell what's going on. But I'll
give it another try.

Sam Cooke did that one too, and prior to Janis.

It's an old standard from Porgy and Bess. There
are a ton of versions and all so much different.
Ella Fitzgerald did a beautiful rendition. It's
one of those songs that seems to lend itself well
to personal interpretations, which I'm trying to
get my band to do.

We are an adult, student band but the guitarists,
one in particular, wants to do nothing but simple,
easy tunes. The last song they added was Just The
Way You Are by Bruno Mars. I almost quit over that
one, lol.

I have the Sam Cooke version on CD. Not sure how many chords are in it, but he does it fairly slow!! Playing it slow would help a little, even if someone HAD to do bar chords :)

Could be that they are playing a minor blues progression. Look that up on your googley computer...
