Acoustic bass buzz

I had purchased 2 acoustic/ electric basses (AXL AG-700-BC thin body & Beaver Creek 26" short scale) I tried all types of strings: Martin 80/20 bronze, DR RPB-45/105 Phosphor bronze & after more research $70 Acousticore bronze wound nylon, they all buzzed. Both basses have plastic nuts, is that the problem?

No. Are these new or used basses? Where is the buzz coming from? If the buzz is closer to the nut, I would suspect the nut grooves were cut too deep. If closer to the last fret, I would suspect either the truss rod needs tightening because the neck is too flat. All necks need a little bow in them. Or the saddles are too low, therefore the string height is too low.

I agree with the previous post...there are a lot of different things that can cause string buzz, so a little more information would be helpful in trying to help you narrow this down. The "set up" is the first thing I would check, as stated in previous post...also while doing a setup you may find a that a fret may need reseated, spot filed, and/or re-crowned. Also one thing that gets overlooked on an acoustic is the bridge and saddle, so that would be worth checking out as well. One last thing to mention would be the string plate underneath the bridge, this particular piece, when worn out, can cause a lot of different issues...string buzz being one of them.

Jeff,

Thanks for suggestions. Are there better made bridges available for acoustic basses to give that upright sound?

again, no...but there are other things you can do to get a more "upright" sound.

One is to use flat wound strings. For an upright sound I would stay away from D'Adarrio XL Chrome Flats. I love these strings, but they are bright, too bright for a stand-up sound. Try Fender Flats, they are cheaper anyway.

Another is to experiment with different types of PUPs, like bridge PUPs, or a sound-hole PUP, and run it through a small amp.

Tapewound strings perhaps? Steel strings coated with heavy
black nylon "tape".

I believe they come in two types. Some are roundwound
under the nylon and some are flatwound underneath. I'd
assume the flats would give a nice upright-ish thump.

FWIW...

excellent idea Mr. Bostanomus! I was also thinking, or wondering, if there are any nylon strings available out there that would fit an acoustic bass...hmmmm

yup I have a set of GHS nylons on my fretless. I know there are a few other companies making them, but I have been pretty happy with the GHS brand.
