Methinks I'm Regressing...

I've been playing since about 1983. From about 1995-2008 I
mostly stuck with five strings (all two of them). For some
reason I can't seem to get any enjoyment out fo fivers
anymore!

I just don't get it; it's maddening! I played my Spector five at
rehearsal tonight and didn't enjoy myself at all. What's wrong
with me????

your shorts are too tight, are you trying to sing like Getty Lee as well as play like him?

Also, I think you should cut off one of those strings and turn your bass up.

Time to try something new?

Is it the bass or what you're playing? I found myself stuck in a bit of a rut with the band a while back, rehearsing the same material over & over & over and got over it by (borrowing a bit from your idea of playing along with the radio)having my kids randomly select a CD from my collection and popping it in the tascam bass trainer.

I go back and forth between my 5 & 4 stringers, some days I think should just string one of the 4s BEAD and stick with it.

If it's GAS you've got a new bass never hurt anyone either (unless the missus finds out.....)

Actually, I've come to love the sound of flatwounds; Chromes
is particular. I ordered a set for the Spector in hopes that it'll
get my juices flowing again. I also ordered a pedal tuner
maybe that will do for me what new shoes do for a woman!
Lol!

Oh, and this weekend will find me plugging in to an SVT rig
(borrowed). Maybe that'll help.

Is the Spector comfy to play? Some basses have nice action, but are really heavy, some are light but not so easy to play for the fretting hand.

I have an ugly Washburn thats easy and comfy to play, I hope to upgrade it a bit at some point. I also have a 32" scale Ibanez that plays pretty well, but its a little heavy. If I find the need for the low B, I will probably just convert the Washburn to BEAD tuning. I think I first read about doing that in Wheats bass book online, which is a great "Cliff Notes" version of learning the bass.

There's no doubt in my mind that it's the most comfortable
bass I have. Weight, feel, and body shape/size are great. I'm
happy with the pickup/preamp combination; the bass sounds
good.

Something just isn't right. Maybe the fifth string is getting
under my skin. I rarely use it, but a few of our tunes require
it. Could be that I've fallen back in love with four so much
that I need to re-acclimate to five.

It could all be mental too.

Hey Bo, I've always been a roundwound fan myself but lately when searching for a nice compromis to string my Hfner violin bass I discovered the halfrounds by d'Addario and they're just great! Brilliant and bright but with a flatwound feel!

That's cool, but I like the tone of the Chromes. I think the
bright rounds might be turning me off. I only use them on my
Peavey bass now.

Thank you.

Oh, how's your grandchild?

Hi Bo, Eline is doing great so far in the first month of her existence...can't wait to play some low notes for her although she already knows how serious "bottom"-notes sound! LMAO
She's an angel!

The five is all about being able to play low Eb's, D's and C's. There are many lines that descend to those notes, only to have to jump up to them. A lot of folks crave that, I'm one. But it's totally cool to not be like that. Some are just suited for a four. Perhaps you're one...It's ALL good!

Interestingly (or maybe not), my 5 has a high C, instead of a low B.
Kind of fun for doing pizz solo stuff, and slap octaves. That being
said, I do play my 4's much more often these days...

I tried that once. It felt really weird so I went back to low B.
