String length rant/vent/question
I just received the D'Addario chrome flats I
ordered last week, and since I'm restringing a
five-string with a 35" scale and Badass V bridge
with string-through option, I ordered longs.
Well wouldn't you know it, they're too short,
string-through is not an option, and going the
other way, the silk doesn't clear the nut on the B
string (I haven't tried the others yet)
According to D'Addies website, longs should fit
34-36 inch scales, which should have given me
enough slack for this instrument.
So the question - Should I try to remove the silk
that comes in contact with the nut or just let it
go, as long as the intonation up the neck is OK?
I can't see me playing very many open B's in the
styles of music I do.
Next question: Why don't the Leo Quan folks drill
the string holes big enough to clear the string
diameters?
Now I'm going to check out the rest of the strings.

Gp back to D'Addario with your problem.
From my experience they give excellent back-up service and are glad to fix problems.
Did you opt for the Long Scale or Super Long Scale?

I went with the longs, and now that I trimmed the
silk, the meatiest part of the string breaks over
the nut just fine.
I have the pickup out for replacement right now,
and I only just got an email from Becky Lawrence
that my p-46 is in the mail, so in a few days I'll
be able to make a full evaluation.
I will say that the feel and the acoustic sound of
these strings is really nice, especially after the
crap Fender steel rounds I just took off it.
Worst comes to worst, I'll put these chromes on my
Fender Jag (it's about due)and order some super
longs for the fiver.

A few years ago, I ordered some D' Addario rounds, long scale, being told they would fit my 35" rear fed bass. They did not. I needed to order the super long scale. Maybe that is the issue, I do not know.

When I built Betty, 34" string-through-body, I originally purchased the Longs - Chrome Flats. They were too short. The string-through adds about an inch and a half - depending on body thickness. The Super Long Chrome Flats worked perfectly. I think there was enough for them to work on a 35" through-body as well but could not swear to it, only at it lol

Yeah, I swore at this one here then, I could not believe it! The folks at Musicians Friend were pretty cool, they sent me a set of the super long scale, no charge, as the salesperson was the one who told me the others I had ordered would fit. I was lucky I suppose.

string through body requires a longer string. usually they are measure from the bridge to the nut so the windings don't touch either. the string said they'd fit 34 to 36 inch scales, 35 being the shortest before the winds touch the nut or saddles, 36 being they will still be able to have enough string to be wound on the tuners. extra long scale enables string through body. clear as mud.

I had read somewhere someone had that same problem with the silk hitting the nut. Glad you got the problem resolved. Don
