Will this work?

Hi Everybody! Got another question for ya!
I hope this one doesn't stir up a hornets nest, like the last one about LimeWire! Anyway, here goes.
I have a acoustic/elec. bass, with flatwounds on them. I really like flats! I don't care for the sound I'm getting, so I thought I'd try rounds.
The question, can I use electric strings on a acoustic bass, and vice versa? I can't afford to buy new strings @ $25.00 + a set. Those are the cheaper ones! Thanks for any help on this yet another, SBJ dumb question of the month!

Peace, SBJ

i would think the tension on electric bass strings would be higher than acoustic and therefore be a bad idea, may warp your neck.

why would you want to do that? will the pup pickup acoustic strings? peizo pups run on vibration not magnets. you action would have to be adjusted to compensate for the backbow in the neck created by low tension strings

If it did work, it might not be the optimum sound for an acoustic, and you might be looking for strings again.

Maybe you should shop around a bit more for strings - try Elderly Instruments for one. They typically have good prices. They might also be able to give you some good guidance on subbing those strings or NOT subbing them.

every string company makes acoustic bass strings, which are wound, bronze strings. Ernie ball has them for as low as $16.00.

You "can" do any that you mentioned, but you may not like the results.

Acoustic strings on an electric sound pretty dead, because they lack the magnetic qualities of an electric string.

I've known a lot of bassists that prefer the sound of electric strings on an acoustic bass, but it would require a set up job, so the bass can handle the different tension.

Have you thought about nylon wound strings? They are similar to flats, but have flat nylon wrapped around metal core. I use them on my fretless and like them. They are little more "woody" sounding than an all metal string, so may not be the sound some are looking for.

With price as a concern, I would try GHS, Ernieball, d'addario, or SIT strings, as they tend to be less expensive. Personally I like GHS, some say they're hard on your fingers, but if you're just starting out, it would be a good way to develop callouses.

I use the same set on my abg as on electric and don't have any issues. A light gauge Nickle or steel set shouldn't be an issue and has a slightly mellower sound than bronze or phosphor bronze.

Thanks for all the replies! I just didn't want to get rid of good strings. I'm not liking the sound on my acoustic. I have acoustic flat wounds on it.
I have an Ibanez electric, with elec. rounds. I just thought I might be able to switch them, but I guess I'll be better off just buying the proper strings for them! Thanks, Again for your help,
SBJ

p.s. The acoustic only sounds bad when unplugged.
When I use an amp, it sounds much better! Thoughts?

it sounds better because the amp efectively "turns up your bass" hehehehe
