Help a financially challenged bassist choose "the one."

So I've been playing bass on the first four strings on an acoustic, like I'm sure some of you here have. I've come to the point of where I'm about to buy a bass. Someone help me, I'm clueless. I had my eyes on an Ibanez GSR, but I've been told recently, it just plain sucks. A friend told me to get something called a Fender Squire or something like that. Somebody refer me to something, around $200? Thanks. And happy fishing (clich joke.).

Check it a couple of times a day. Good things go

My two cents worth is , Forget about brand names,get yourself out and about and try as many as you can to see which type feels right and sounds right to you.... none of us are the same and right for one is not always right for another.......
