Louis Johnson!!!!!!!! "Get Da Funk Outta Ma Face" is a classic and I remember the first time I ever heard the bass solo on "Stomp" - my eyes just glazed over!

james jamerson played on many R&B songs in the 60's.
but he was a funk machine.


i tend to be inspired by other musicians,
instruments, and life more so than bass players

I like Louis Johnson, but check out some younger guys like Stuart Zender.

...and Sweet Charles Sherrell for the older, simpler groove funk

Listen to all the above mentioned players, and don't forget Francis Rocco Prestia of Tower of Power fame...he didn't slap but he was one FONG-Kay white boy...

Uh...DUH!?! I was addressing a notion among many players that the slap thang is what funk is. I don't think that, I just like to provide options. You are correct. Funk is a feeling, not a technique. Rocco is one of the guys who you are speaking of....

I spent HOURS on that one to nail it. Then not too long ago I attended a workshop with Rocco. He had folks come up and play "What Is Hip". So a guy gets up there and plays, and he's not doin' anything NEAR Rocco's line. I remember thinkin' "Hmm. See! I got it....". Then Rocco stands up and says that he really preferred when someone plays it their own way and NOT the way he did it. Oh, our egos...

Good to know! LOL! I could never nail that line for anywhere near the length of the song anyway.
