Epiphone EB3 - Can I fit a choke?

The original Gibson EB3's had a 4 position selector switch with bridge, neck, both, and neck with 'choke'. The Epiphone EB3 has a 3 position selector, for either pickup or both.

Can anyone tell me, is it possible to fit a choke to the Epiphone, and if so what parts are required? Also, would it be worth doing, I've not heard the difference it makes, but I understand it gives an even bassier sound?

Any details on how to do it would be great, but that may be asking too much. I've done some rewires myself before, but if this is a possibility it may be going to a tech for the work.

The Choke was a capacitor, about the equivalent of turning the tone control down. There are much better electronic options available today, Eq or preamp pedals.

I beg to differ, a choke is a coil (inductor), and
has the opposite effect of a capacitor. In other
words, it is part of a high-pass filter that rolls
off the lows.

I suppose the original intent was to make the old
mudbuckers a bit less muddy.

I concur that active EQ, onboard or a pedal would
be a better solution.

the bb king guitar has a knob with a ton of setting
that basically does the same thing.

alot of people build them in boxes so they dont have
to modify the guitar.

the jack casidy epiphone bass has a 3 position knob
and inductor. sounds great. but i dont think i can
do that to my single coil p bass

Cheers for the response. My line of thought was, why have
Epiphone made a bass so close to the original but not given it
the original functions, and if it wasn't much of a mod then I'd
give it a go.

I have now listened to a couple of Gibson EB3 demos on
youtube, and the choke doesn't seem to give much that would
make it worth while.

I'm not going for any EQ alterations, I want the tone the bass
has, I have a Musicman Stingray for other sounds.

Thanks again.

If a choke was the answer, wouldn't every bass have one? I would look into a pedal first before any modifications.

Cheers Jim,

Don't think that argument stands up very well though.

Why do we have active and passive basses, why are there so
many different types and configurations of pickups? If you used
your theory every bass would be the same, surely we all by
different basses because they all have different characteristics?

I thought the choke was part of the distinctive EB3 sound, and
wondered why it wasn't included as part of an EB3 replica.

I'm not after alterations or add ons for any particular sound, I
was just thinking it would make the bass a little more like the
original Gibson.

Thanks again for your response though.

The 2 main reasons we don't see more inductor coils on basses is the expense, capacitors are cheap, and with the advent of EQs onboard and outboard they are in many ways redundant.

I have the EB3 and actaully am looking into getting the DP120 Dimarzio neck pick up to clean it up a bit. I have Fender flats and get plenty of bottom. I agree with the others add an onboard eq or pedal. Don
