Medical Question

Been playing bass for a long time - right hand player - over the past 2 months I've developed pain from my left elbow down to my fingers. Doctor said it was tendinitis and to stop playing for 6 weeks. I said No can do - he said well, live with the pain. I'm using an elbow brace but even doing everyday items I'm in pain. I can'tbear not playing for 6 weeks.
I've used heat, ice and massage but it's getting worsse. A musician friend suggested cortisone shots. Any advice - the doctor said it wasn't carpal tunnel.

Gary, I remember talking to Carol Kaye about something similiar she was going through. She was almost crippled and went to a special doctor. Go to her website and she has a e-mail link there. Ask her about that. She may have advise for you. Tell her Ralph Grasso's friend Dan Gable says hi.

Tendinitis can be a real b*tch. Ice, compression, stretching and anti-inflammatories can lessen the symptoms but unless the injured area is rested it doesn't get a chance to properly heal and, depending on the severity of the injury, 6 weeks is not unduly long.

At a minimum try to rest it as much as possible and cut back on your playing time. Personally, I'd avoid cortisone.

Caveat - I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV but I can sympathize - I went through a bout of mild tendinitis in my right arm a couple years back.

I'm medical and don't think cortisone will help and I don't think they would give you one for tendinitis. I had this a few years ago and rest was the only thing that helped and ice, I talked with a physical therapist and that's what they told me. It may feel better sooner and it may not take 6 weeks. But I remember it wasn't fun and hurt all the time. I still played but cut back alot for about 3 weeks. Good luck Don

Advice; always get a second opinion. Even about my opinion about getting a second opinion.

Play it safe.

You MIGHT find changing your left arm positioning helps. If you play with your bass low, raise it a lot. Or vice versa.
