Practice sound levels the groove

Will keep it to the point :)

While practicing with my new bandmates the sound has gone as such.

The drummer plays Really loud. Then guitarist with the biggest amp, then the second guitarist (rhythm usually) Then me playing loud but only able to hear the loud tone of my bass nothing else, hardly audible at all. Finally with singing hiding behind everything.

It's the case of someone playing loud, then everyone trying to compete. I had a 500w amp in the example above, full volume.

Not experienced both in the technical side of getting a good sound nor fact I have to try and tell others to play louder/quieter.

(Thought I'd squeeze in a second question while i'm making a thread)

Becomming better at improvising I feel like i'm making good progress on the note part, creating interesting grooves is something I feel I can improve on, love playing straight 8ths but i know we all like to funk it up little sometimes :)

Many thanks for reading.

Ya'll playing to loud. Turn it down and discover what you really can do.

Is that the mix the band wants?

Really. Ask them.

You're gonna need the band to work as a band to solve this.

Why is the singing hiding? Poor singer? Poor technique? Underpowered PA?

Drummer's likely to play loud no matter what, but once the general level comes down he is likely too also.

Getting guitars to turn down is easiest if you bring a gun. If they are having problems hearing themselves point their cabs at their ears.

Do/did you guys soundcheck? Try bringing in the weakest instrument first (vocals?) or the unamplified one (drums). Whichever, get those 2 balanced. Then balance in the next weakest (bass). Then next weakest (rhythm G). Then lead G.

Thanks Ed. I'm impressed I avoided an 'over-loud guitarist' rant.
