I thought this was interesting.

"The Catholic Church banned music that contained polyphony (more than one musical part playing at one time), feeling that it would cause people to doubt the unity of God. The church also banned musical interval of an augmented fourth, the distance between C and F-Sharp and also known as a tritone (the interval in Leonard Bernsteins West Side Story when Tony sings the name "Maria"). This interval was considered so dissonant that must have been the work of the Lucifer, and so the church named it Diabolus in musica. It was the medieval church in an uproar."

Daniel J. Levitin.
From his book, This Is Your Brain On Music.

I hope there aren't Catholics that still think this way.

Interesting that the Diabolus is the center for all jazz re-harmonization. I do know of Catholic churches that hold masses in Gregorian Chant which is the product of the banned polyphony. Those same churches also host both traditional & contemporary music masses as well so go figure.

My church does ban gangsta rap.

and contemporary Christian music.
It's Bluegrass Gospel or it's the devil's music.

So I don't bother to tell them that I just did a
quick run of Black Sabbath in the middle of this
hymn.

Also worth mentioning is that early polyphony sounded pretty
jumbled and unorganized-several voices carrying on at the same
time, with different lines, different entrances, sometimes even
different languages in each line. Until a man named Palestrina
came along, that is, and starting writing in a way that made the
text clear and understandable, convincing the church to allow it.

What an odd thing for them to do! I'm sure if there is a "Big G" up there he/she is above all this petty nonsense.

Music is music and doesnt represent anything evil/good just because of intervals it contains. What superstious nonsense.

And I write to y'all from Ireland. They dont get much more Catholic than the folk we have here. Although it has to be said their numbers are falling dramatically and at a bloody rapid rate too.

It would seem that soon there will be as many non-theists here on the Emerald Isle as theists. I guess we are falling in line with the rest of Europe after all.
