Seems I have a little Viking ancestry...

I participated in the National Geographic Genographic project and I just got my results. I'm a haplogroup U5.

U5s first appeared around 15000 years ago in and around the Caucasus in central Russia. They migrated north to northern Europe and Scandanavia, especially Finland.

Since my recent ancestry, as far back as I know, is English the most likely scenario is I have a female ancestor who was part of the various Viking occupations of the British Isles.

I like to think she looked like this...

So I've ordered my hat

and bass

Now I just need to know what Vikings drink? Any of you Scandanavian bassists have some suggestions?

Did any of you participate in the Genographic project? If so what was your ancient ancestry? Were there any surprises.

How did you get to particpate in the project? It sounds kind of interesting, it would be a real drag though if you found out you were related to.......

All you do is purchase a kit from the genographic web site for $99. You send in your cheek swab (it's anonymous BTW). 6-8 weeks later your analysis is available using the supplied code.

At that point you can elect to participate in the project by answering some simple questions about your known ancestry and place of birth. It's simple and very interesting.

That's an awful picture of Charles. Thankfully I have no royal blood.

Cool. And, yes, I'm sure your GGGGGGGGGGGGrandmother looked exactly like that!!

Brings up an interesting question. When is it that we can claim specific ancestry? My ancestry is pretty darn English with some Scots (and a couple of Scots who spent a generation in Ireland before heading west) and at least one errant Welshman thrown in. By that, I mean that all the ancestors of whom I'm aware came to the US from England, Scotland or Wales during the last 400 years. But what does that mean? Saxons, Ingles, Jutes, Celts, Picts, Britons, Gauls (Gaels), Vikings, and Normans all have done a fair amount of procreating in Britain. Were they that different from one another? It gets even more squirrelly when you consider specific events. For instance, we know that Harold held off a Viking invasion in 1066 only to have to turn around and (unsuccessfully) fight off a Norman invasion led by William. So, the Normans owe at least some of their victory to the Vikings who distracted and wore out Harold. But wait. Wasn't Normandy (Northman) given to the Vikings to keep them from invading the rest of France? So, the Normans were really Vikings anyway. It's all very confusing.

The genographic project isn't really about recent ancestry. It's more to do with the routes of expansion of the human race from our birthplace of east Africa.

It's one of those technological things that I find really cool. It's a really amazing thing that we can trace the movement of humans from almost 200000 years ago from some cheek swabs.

Beer is fine, but I figure if your off to pillage a foreign coast you'd want something stronger. Surely there's a favorite drink up there above the arctic circle. Maybe Schnaps?

Yeah she's cute alright. I'll bet if the invaders looked like that the Brits didn't put up much of a fight.
