Project Bass

So I decided to build a Project Bass. I also figured it might be interesting to start a thread with pics of each stage of this project's progress. Maybe it's boring or lame to most out there, but I liked the idea so here goes.

Decided to build a fretless P-Bass. So, Stage 1 would be the procurement of a Fender P body. (I think I knew a guy named Fender Peabody back in High School...) This is what I have found so far:

Guess I gotta look harder!

If anyone is interested, and they are building a P Bass (P here meaning Project), feel free to post yer pics and progress on this thread, or post a link to a thread you have already.

Still looking for a servicable P body...there are some on EBay. Should have one in the next couple of weeks or so.

Yep, never bothered to go down that track. I was going to buy all the parts for my first one but my mate who had built a guitar before (and done a great job) suggested that if I intended to make a bass at some stage anyway why not just build the whole thing.

So I did, and now I have built 7 not including the above 2.

Have you considered building one?

These ones are Maple and Mahogany. I will use either Wenge or Rosewood for the fingerboard (depends on what we have got left!!)

Yes I have considered it...and I still am. That would be a much cheaper route to take ending up with a great tone wood...something dense like walnut or maybe mahogany. The big problem with that is the real lack of basic woodworking tools in my possession. Like a decent table saw...a router or two and definately a drill press. And a few gouges, rasps, files...oops, wait, I have some needle files I used to use working on Harleys. Anyway, I am exploring several possibilities, thanks for the input.

I made my first 2 basses (on my homepage) with only basic tools. Router, drill press and a jigsaw. It really isn't that hard to do.

I now have much more to choose from (my mate has all the tools, he is a tool junkie!!!), we even have a CNC milling machine for pickups and control cavities.

There is a free open source 3d design program called "blender" that will interface with CNC machines for your designs and such. I use it to make videos and such for my band.

Thanks Jeff, I will send it to my mate. He has programs to run the CNC operations, but he also builds them so it may be of interest to him.

I have decided to buy a body blank from Warmouth. They will route the neck pocket and PUP pockets for me, as well as the guts pocket. With a cheapo router and a lot of elbo grease I can shape the body myself after that. It should start soon....
