For me - I've been totally digging Badfinger all
over again. You can really hear Paul McCartney in a
lot of their stuff (he produced some of their stuff)
and George Harrison (in the same way). Pete Ham was
a wonderful musician. Todd Rundgren also produced a
lot for them.
For someone who pretty much got handed the bass, Tina Weymouth sure figured out how to groove on little to no training. The bass line for Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club is simple, but it is an all time classic, and she is totally in the pocket.
Just a couple of years ago I kept seeing great reviews (in major publications which I usually stay away from; I've a flair for the underground ;)) for a new group called Vampire Weekend and eventually found myself in the checkout line with their self-titled debut in hand. Turns out I absolutely loved it. They just released their follow-up "Contra" and stayed very true to form. I've been "recruiting" fans by announcing it as "Paul Simon meets Cake meets Beck" which I think is pretty accurate, so if that sounds good to you too, you'll like Vampire Weekend. Good Time music all around.
