Is this site dying?

Okay, I was gone for a long time. Computer
problems, financial difficulties, more computer
problems, yadda, yadda. You've heard it all, and
I'm sure you don't want to hear it again.

But, now I am back, and I've discovered that a
lot of my old buddies who were
always around are gone. I'm sure you fellow
old-timers know who I mean. I miss Ahmed always
blowing himself up, for example.

Not only that, but there don't seem to be many
replacements. It used to be that, once I'd
answered all the specific replies to my Fretbuzz
posts, I could then dive into the various
categories, discuss things, answer questions, and
so on. These days, when I go into the various
categories, it seems I can hear howling wind and
see tumbleweeds blowing across a desolate
landscape. The bar under most threads is the grey
of "Older Replies."

Some of my old friends are still around, and some
of the people I know from the past who were pretty
indifferent to me are as well, but all of my old
antagonists are gone.

My old friends who are gone were pretty good
friends. One even sent me a set of three Andrews
Sisters CD's, almost their entire recorded
collection, because he knew I liked them, and he'd
discovered he didn't, anymore. He sent them to me
for free, and wanted nothing in return.

As to old antagonists, I really enjoyed the cut
and thrust of debate with worthy opponents, and I
think they did too.

Regarding the apparently indifferent people, I
think many of them were actually merely too polite
to argue with me. :)

The thing is, this site used to be hoppin'. What
happened? And, is there anything we can do to turn
this around?

Oh, and I didn't mean to slight any of my old

treasure your friendships, and I am sure you know
who you are. :)

The fact that this site needs a lot of updating
,life changes for many of the old timers, plus the
lure of social networking such as facebook

Don't get me wrong, good ol' activebass has been
great to those who have spent any long term time
here. Just hope the admins (even though I know
they are busy with family, other interests, etc)
will soon give the site some TLC it well deserves
without too radically changing the atmosphere.

Geoff,

I realize that there are a lot of other
attractions out there, and I also realize that the
Terrys have neglected this site for a long time.

However, this never seemed to be a deterrent in
the past. Yes, I've had problems with posting
articles, and so on, for years. However, this
site, to me at least, has always been member-
driven. It's always seemed to me to be fueled by
the underdog bass player mentality. "Yes, we are
not the stars, and yes, no one notices us, but,
damnit, they'd miss us if suddenly we were gone!"

Quietly fading away, however, was never my plan,
and I hope it isn't really the plan of the other
old dogs around here.

I think like anything else, it's cyclical. It has slowed a bit, but should come around again to being the go to site for many aspiring, as well as veteran bass players.

It does seem to be down at the moment, but that
isn't unusual around the Christmas time. Overall
(in the larger scope of time), the activity has
slowed as well. I do think the various social
networks have contributed to that. For me, its too
easy to come on AB & Facebook (my other haunt)
because my job always involves sitting in front of
several computer monitors and I have any number of
windows open at any given time to "monitor"
activity. AB & Facebook are two that I monitor
while I work and even on the week ends (on my
laptop in my music room). I miss a lot of the old
ghosts of AB as well (Robert Claypool, Matt Brown,
Steve Fox, Vern, Stephen Smith, Liam, Primoz, and
John Lundgren) to name a few. Sure am glad you
are back though :)

Wayne,

Nah, Ed used to post here quite a lot. He was one
of those old adversaries I mentioned. Apparently
he quit and cleared his homepage, though, or, he
quit so long ago that it got cleared, since it
doesn't show any posts for him anymore.
