Hi David,
Do you mean the (probably) plastic knob itself, or
the potentiometer whose shaft the knob sits on?
I think you probably mean the potentiometer, or
"pot." If that is the case, the pot is secured to
the plate by a very thin nut, (as in nuts and
bolts) usually with a small washer between the nut
and the plate. So, you just open up the bass, poke
the pot back through the hole, slide the washer
and then the nut on, and tighten the nut.
I'm not sure with your particular bass if the pot
is just by itself, though, or if it is attached to
a circuit board. If it is attached to a circuit
board, be careful not to bend the circuit board as
you do this. Oh, and if it is not attached, be
sure to hold it in place so it doesn't turn, and
wrap the wires around itself.
If, on the other hand, you are really talking
about just the knob, some knobs have set-screws
that occasionally come loose. If this is the case,
just select the proper tool to tighten the set-
screw (usually a very small flat-head screwdriver,
or allen wrench) and tighten the screw. Most
knobs, however, just slip onto the splined shaft
of the pot. These occasionally get stripped, and
while you can certainly affix them back onto the
pot using silicone or something similar, the best
solution is to replace the knob. They're pretty
cheap, and if you go to a local guitar repair
shop, chances are they have used ones hanging
around in parts drawers.
