Next Phase

I first posted 12 weeks ago when my first starter bass arrived. I've been practicing 4 to 6 hours a week - playing riffs from the activebass site and beginning to learn where notes are on the fretboard.

When I posted I introduced myself as a mid 50 year old with no musical training or education.

I am wondering from those og you more experienced than me what's the next phase in learning the bass. Where do I go from here in moving forward with playing? Getting a bit bored with playing the same riffs over and over and don't seem to be making a great deal of progress of late.

What do you all recommend? Thanks in advance.

Here's another tip I learned yesterday - masters become great because they constantly are nitpicky about their playing and ask themselves questions. They then try to find answers to those questions and practice extremely slowly. I mean EXTREMELY! If you know you are having trouble with a certain technique (but that technique isn't vital to playing), learn it anyway. Teach yourself as if you were a robot. Do one movement at a time and do it slowly.

This gives your brain a reference point so you can begin to play fast.

I was told not to tell anyone too much about this, so I will leave it at that!

I will just say that it is best to learn how to do things you are already used to doing in different ways. For example, how many ways can you do a pull off or a slide?

Another way Masters get declared so is they go 'outside the box'; walk down a path not walked before.

Experimenting with pull-offs & slides is good. But go wiiiiiide; practice WITH a slide. Borrow one from a guitarist & see what you can create with it.

Everyone has their own styles & paths. Though this isn't mine, there does seem to be a great student/teacher connection here. That's a good thing.

Got another to add to the "Magaro Technique"; one of our guitarists went up to the bar mid-song during a gig, got a beer set on the bar for him, picked it up in his teeth, took a swig. Chipped a tooth, but says it was worth it.

Hey!! Maybe we could rig up a benefit for some charity; the "Shot-Down HotShots" tour.

Hi ya Dags!!! I've seen a lot of bands try to pull that song off without a violin player, and it's usually god-awful! STEEL does an excellent job with it, and Dave in particular. Hence, his biker name that the Club gave him, "FINGERS Magaro"

I'm fairly certain he's earned that name "elsewhere" as well, but that's another subject entirely! LOL!

Heavy bottle slide stuff, great sound.

Could you please explain "The Magaro Technique" for playing with female musicians Dave? I hear it's an exciting way of making music too.

Haha yeah he really makes it try to seem like it. He is sort of a pompous a-- but a nice dude at the same time. He is nuts. He's one of those guys who can't stop pacing around.

I actually have 2 teachers. One plays drums and the other plays practically every instrument. He is easily the fastest guitar player I have seen in person, so his insaneness is well deserved. He's the guy who gave me that tip I listed above.

The good thing about him is that no matter how much better I get, he will never acknowledge it. I didn't realize my progress completely until my friends who heard me about 2 months later were blown away with how much better I got. I am glad I am around teachers who try not to blow steam up my ass.

Acknowledging actual growth is something else. Something I feel is part of a teacher's job.

There is a large difference in telling someone they've done good SO FAR and in telling them they have now learned everything.
