Hiya

I just signed up today and got a couple of welcoming messages. That's pretty cool and it makes me feel welcome.

Basically, I'm an average rhythm player who's been hacking away for years, just for myself. I've played with others a few times. I live in Al Ain, a small town in the UAE. I'm originally from Boston.

The long story short is I'm thinking of taking up the bass because there aren't any bassists here since Marvin Taylor left the university (yes, it's a small town). I know a good drummer, a few singers, a dozen guitarists, but no bassists. The drummer told me bassists are rare and odd, whatever that means.

I'm pretty good at rhythm and timing, so I think I can do it. Maybe I'm kidding myself, who knows. I know theory, scales, basic reading and how to keep a beat. I'm going to go to Dubai in a week or two and look at basses and see if I can get a Fender.

Anyway, if I decide to take the plunge I'll be sure to let you all know.

Btw, I found out about this place from Wholenote.

Yes we are odd. My GF doesn't understand why I have bass as my primary instrument over guitar. She thinks guitar sounds more beautiful I guess.

But I guess not everyone doesn't understand what it feels like to really lay down a sick groove. It feels good. Playing cool guitar solos or rhythym will never do that for me.

If you know the theory than you are already well on your way to becoming a great bassist. The one big difference from guitar is the grooving and feeling. You will see what I mean.

Good luck man! I hope you enjoy the bass!

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. Over the last few days I've found myself listening to the bass in every song. It's kind of weird, but I've never really listened to the bass, I only just heard it. I bet a lot of people do that because we tend to focus on the singing and guitars.

I've been doing my research on basses as well. My problem is going to be finding one. I called the largest music store in the country, located in Dubai, looking for a Fender. They only had two!! in stock. I got the models and prices and they were outrageously overpriced. I bought my Buddy Guy Signature Series from them 6 years ago for $1,200 which was overpriced at the time. I went to the Fender site yesterday and their price is $2,150, so I don't feel bad about it at all, lol.

I'm trying to track down someone in my university that is going to the states for the winter break. It's worth it to pay them $300 to carry one back for me on the plane. I'll have to go hunting around all the music stores in Dubai and maybe I'll get lucky. They do have Yamahas here, but I'm kind of partial to Fenders.

Sorry for venting, but it does annoy me a bit.

I'll figure it out eventually. In the meantime I've been noodling around on my strat playing bass lines...it just doesn't have that oomph though, lol.

Hi Robert,

Welcome to AB. Vern and I arent realy "rare and odd" - thats just the truth disguised as propaganda, lol [well, Vern is just a wee bit of both perhaps]

Its just that Vern and I have a love/hate relationshipWe LOVE to sling poo at each other, and HATE it when people think we are serious.

Then theres that Dave Magaro character who is famous for his love of a particular beer [shhh! never mention Heineken, or youll start him off again!] and is a demon when it comes to the fairer sex, so overall hes a normal sorta guy. He's even moderately sane on occasions.

So, Hi and welcome mate.

SERIOUS NOTE:

Most of the rest here are at least semi-sane. So, enjoy your stay, and may I respectfully suggest you wade through the archives? You will find many useful tips, or just ask it truly is a VERY friendly and informative site. We tend do drift away from bass subjects as you can see, but are very easily dragged back into the serious bass stuff. If you cant get useful bass information here, you aint trying. Lol

Again - Welcome.
