Cant see the D & G strings

Thanks all for the advice and promise not to bombard this site with questions.

When i am practicing (standing) I can't see the D & G strings. I have to nearly memorize fret positions. If i sort of tilt the bass i can peak but I am positive this is not good form. Is it because:

A I'm fat and my belly is impeding my sight
B Thats the norm

I have to go with B. When the bass is properly positioned (while standing) you can really only see the E string and possibly the A. Ultimately you are going to be playing by feel and sound, not by sight.

That's why most basses have the little fret markers on the top side of the fingerboard as well as the more obvious ones on the front.

When changing hand positions, especially a large change like 5th fret to 12th fret for example, it's quite acceptable to look. But generally you are looking at the top edge of the neck rather than tilting the bass and looking at the strings.

Hope this helps a bit.

It could be A especially if you are going for that fashionable low slung bass look. Which btw from a fellow round guy I think it looks even goofier for one us us to go for that low slung look, almost as bad as droopy drawers in the back.
To be helpful I would suggest practicing in front of a mirror to really see where your hands are and work until muscle memory takes hold and you don't have to look any more.

LOL! I like it. It sounds a lot better than fat/chunky/portly etc.

A low slung bass with a ROUND tummy does look pretty silly. My bass sort of sits tilted forward if I sling it too low. I can't see the strings at all. hahahaha

Could try this...

Raise bass so it sits on TOP of belly roll and it might tilt it the opposite way so that you can see. { you shouldn't really look!] Please don't think I'm being facetious [hey that word has all the vowels in the correct order a,e,i,o,u] - I too am a wee bit rotund. I have seen it done by professionals. Can't think of his name, but the bass player that accompanied Eric Clapton on his world tour 2 years back that included Australia was called Willie somebody or other, and he was truly an enormous man. He had to sit at the back of the stage and play with the bass tilted on tum top. He was introduced as "the biggest Willie in Australia" but by Jeez he could play.
