What if somebody offered you more than your bass was worth?

I am going to a Beatlefest this week end. I thought about taking my '61 (lefty) Hofner Cavern along. I am a little afraid to do it. They are hard to find and I am wondering what I would do if somebody offered me substantially more than I paid for it. Would you sell your sentimental or favorite bass if you could make a little chunk on it? (are you a little more loyal and nostalgic?)

Most of my basses were bought for less then they are worth. Given that, I would have to decide on a case by case.

Now as far as more then it is worth, that is different. If offered substantially more then the instrument is worth, I would probably sell. I don't have any basses that I am all that attached to. The one exception might be my ESP B-50 that I made into a fretless. If I was offered twice what it is worth I would still not sell because we are only talking a couple hundred buck, and I like it more then that. If they offered me $500 for it it would be gone to it's new home.

I think you answered your own question - no! If it's something hard to replace that you love playing why would you even think of selling it? I'd even be inclined to hold onto something more commonplace (a MIM p-bass for example) if there was a lot of history with it.

I think another way to ask this same question is: With more money than your bass is worth, could you possibly purchase a replacement you'd like better?

And I think this depends entirely on the bass. I have one I almost never touch - someone make me a decent offer.

I have one I wouldn't want to lose, but I'm confident I could replace it with such an exact duplicate that yeah, I'd sell it for more than I paid, buy another and pocket the difference.

I have another I doubt I'd ever be able to replace with an equivalent, but if someone offered me enough for it, I think I could commission a custom bass I'd enjoy as much.

So the algorithm is simple: Get the offer. Do the legwork to see what you can buy with what's offered. Compare the best alternative with what you're selling. If it's better, do the deal.

NO! At least not my main basses they are all very special to me, pretty rare and would be very difficult to impossible to replace. OTOH I do have instruments up for a trade, a couple of weeks ago I traded a bass for a small Sonor drum kit for my studio.
IMO your Cavern falls into the special category.

I guess it would all depend on what it's worth to YOU
My bass,Cold Ethyl is NOT for sale...but if someone offered me a ridiculous price like $2000 or more than I guess she's have to go....but she's not really "worth" that so no worries
:)
Your Cavern could be inviting to someone and they may want to pay big $$$ for it.
Again,it all comes back to you....
There are several things in my possession ~~Great Grandad's whittled elephant, grandpere's old Savage shotgun~~ that have way too much sentimental value to be for sale and I dare say they cannot be bought.
But,never say never
:)
Cool subject for discussion,Mike

I was going to say pretty much the same thing... the value of any of my basses to me includes it's sentimental value.. not just what it would sell for in a pawn shop.

My Gretsch is just NOT for sale. No way, no how. There's just way too much history there and it can't be replaced.

I'd let the '78 4001 go for 2K. Then I'd get another Tune bass and pocket the difference.

Well 25K would be tempting. I'd still have the memories after all. But ultimately I think it would have to be more than that before the temptation got too much. I guess it'd need to be more than I can make in a year before I'd sell.

I should add that the only thing I'd like more than that bass is a cabin on a nice trout stocked lake. That's about the only thing I'd be willing to sell it for. And even Randy's not likely to pay that for it (although I guess he could afford it). You reading this Randy? LOL!
