I was recently shoping for vinyl records at a local music store. I came upon a copy of "The Jefferson Airplane's " (Crown Of Creation). What a cool cover of the band with a big nuclear explosion in the background.. I have never been much of an "Airplane" fan, but for a buck fifty discount i figured why the hell not !
OH MY GOODNESS ... WHY I HAVE GONE ALL THIS TIME AND NOT GIVEN THE AIRPLANE MORE OF A LISTEN IS BEYOND ME?...JACK CASADY IS A FREAKING ANIMAL....songs like "in time" "triad"
and
my ultimate favorites
"woman with a greasy heart"
the second or third verse of this song Jack goes off on this mind blowing scale change that begins on the first frets, and ends high with the chorus, then immediately descending back down again
"if you feel"
this song begins with Marty's vocals and Jorma's guitar while Jacks bass is being slowly added into the mix (cool studio trick)
as soon as the bass appears the song really gets hot and starts to boil. once again he's all over the fret board...up ways, and side ways, and left ways....all over.
lets just say
I now own every airplane album up until Jack and Jorma left and formed "hot tuna"...and i am currently hunting for " tuna records"
just hearing "Hesitation Blues" is enough to give any bassist a case of the Jack !!!
i bought a 60's compalation when i was bout 14 (one of the fist proper albums i bought)as soon as i heard 'white rabbit' i became a fan of jefferson airplane ... so tripy but rockin!!!! wooooooooooooooooooooooo :)
You should listen to the band he started after Airplane. Hot Tuna has been touring for years. Jack's bass playing with Hot Tuna is phenomenal.
They come through my City a couple times a year and play at the Neighborhood Theater. They do an acoustic set and an electric set. During both sets, Jack plays his Epiphone signature semi-hollow bass. I have one... check it out on my AB page... it's the ebony semi-hollow on a floor stand.
He has an instructional DVD called The Bass Guitar of Jack Casady which is a great investment if you are a fan of his playing style.
Yo Jake,
Awesome find! Heck, I thought that I was the only one who still listened to LP's! LOL!!
