The best Xmas bass fill!
Hey Everyone,
I know it's a few day's late but every year I'm on gigs and
someone calls "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway and every
year without fail, after going back and re-visiting the original,
the Willie Weeks bass fill at 1:29 seconds of the tune blows my
mind!
Anyone out there have a copy of the original? Check it out and
get back to me, maybe my favorite bass fill of all time.
The guts to pull it off in the studio, the over-the-bar-line focus,
the sound, the confidence... Totally unreal.
It's interesting, if you pay close attention he try's to go for the
fill in the first verse (around 39 secs) but holds back.
Very cool,
CT

I love all of Willlie Weeks palying, if you check out the live version
of "What's Goin On" on Donny Hathaway's "A Donny Hathaway
Collection" album he's amazing. When people call "What's Goin On"
on gigs here in New York they usually mean this version 90% of the
time. It has a few different changes and some cool substitutions in
the solo. Willie is like the extention of Jamerson on this track,
amazing album. (I think "This Christmas" is also on the same
album).. iTunes it, you'll love it!
