For instance, put your fretting hand in 'first position' (index on 1st 'fret', 2nd on 2nd, 3 on 3, 4 on 4). Play an E major scale, one octave, starting on the open string, without shifting your hand. Do the same for F major, in the same position. Then Gb major, G major, Ab major, then A major (next open string).. keep going, once you get to C you'll have to start shifting just on the G string. Eventually you can do G major entirely on the G string, and keep going. Then try doing them all 2 octaves. Try other scales/modes.
