I recommend Serious Electric Bass by Joel Di Bartolo (Warner Brothers). It can be hard going and requires lots of patience, but its a great book and works for me :-).

True, Dummies is a great book, but I would add three more that greatly increase your playing and that go beyond the Dummies book. Thay are also quite simple and begginer friendly.

Bass Fitness, An Exercising Handbook.

It got my hands skills I never even thought I could acquire.

Building Walking Bass Lines.

Aside from the walking part, it greatly trained my ear on recognizing intervals and chord chanes.

Reading Contemporary Electric Bass.

With this one not only did I learn to read music in a faster way, it also improved my timing and rythim.

The best bass book I own and have ever come accross is 'The Melodic Bass Library' By Jimmy Haslip. Check it out. (Its a bit old now, though)

No problem. I've had that book since I was 15, and even at a ripe age of 28 I still refer to it all the time. Its like my bible. Ive had MANY bass books over the years, and its hard to sift through all the data and find ones that really improve your playing, but this one helped me the most. And it even comes with a CASSETTE! My god. Remember those things?
