Missing Lessons

Just wanted to let you know about some changes:

We got a cease and desist letter about musical copyright infringement on the site from the good people at the NMPA (National Music Publishers' Association), so a bunch of lessons had to be taken down.

To refresh everyone's memory about what's not acceptable, published songs not in the public domain are protected by copyright and only its authors or those who have been granted permission by the author can create alternative versions of these songs.

Thus, if you want to make a lesson based upon copyrighted material, then you must get permission of the author. It isn't enough to put your own spin on known material, as derivative works are also covered under copyright, so these also need the permission of the author to be published.

Otherwise, don't use copyrighted material as the basis for a lesson. Many songs use the same chord progression or the same style, so you can easily teach a lesson about how to play in a specific style on a specific progression without citing a known song as an example of that progression or style.

Understood Chris.

Just saw the same message over on WN.

I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty, but I would like to attach the other bit of news that appeared on WN underneath your same post:

* In the not so distant future, the site is going to be revamped to make it more current. It's a little hard to believe, but this site was originally built in 1999, which in Internet time is basically the Stone Age. The revamp will hopefully make it a better place to share ideas and information about all things guitar. Sean and I have a lot of tricks up our sleeve, and WholeNote is about to get all our focus in a few weeks ... (and for you ABers who are peeking, you'll get the same treatment as well) ...

That's all for now. Thanks for putting up with us.

...so the person who wrote the first 12 bar blue progression is laughing then?

But seriously, one cannot possibly claim that a lesson is derivative simply because it uses the same chord sequence as some song, somewhere, sometime that is copyright.

That's right - one cannot claim that a specific progression belongs to them. But the trouble lies in actually naming a specific song as the basis for a musical example in a lesson. More Than a Feeling and Sweet Home Alabama both have the same basic changes in their verses. You can still teach a lesson about walking a D-C-G-G progression without saying "here are my Sweet Home Alabama lines" ...

This is a load of horse manure. I personally have put up 10 lessons, all of which have been deleted...for what?!?

Everything I've put up is my own material (unless modes are copyrighted).

Last straw. I'm done.

You can't use the word "yeah".

That's used in a Beatles song... they'll shut us down now for ripping off lyrics!

OMG, what happens if you use the word "love"? That's in almost every song written since the dawn of time? Maybe it's in the public domains now......LOL
