Activebass in need of Maitenence?/Updating?

Hello Wholenote community,

Not to cause a rukus, but does anyone else feel that Wholenote/Activebass are in need of some serious overhaul, or at least updating?

I've been a member of wholenote for MANY years now, and I don't think I've seen any changes for a least a few years now.

Most concerning is the lack of maitenence and updating of the front page, I mean, how long has 'Learning to Jam' been the 'Hot Lesson' here? I shouldn't be complaining, because its my lesson, which is good for my ego, but is not as good for the community, I remember when they used to rotated frequently and it was like, "who's the hot lesson this week?". For that matter when was the 'News' last updated? Blink 182, really? At the very least it could be taken off the page if the service has been stopped.

Which is ok, but it brings to mind all the new service opportunities that could be integrated into activebass.com. The site was overhauled a few years ago to allow MP3 hosting, but has been stagnant (besides member activity of course) for a long time. With the advent and popularization of guitar lessons on Youtube, I'm suprised I don't see 'in-lesson' video links all over activebass, or any activity into looking for new more interactive ways to participate in the community. How about a section that's linked to myvirtualband.com so that activebass members can get together and form virtual collectives/bands over the internet, teach through playing! If Activebasssers and Wholenoters both got together on myvirtualband.com, they could actually play together, share their experiences across instrumental barriers. With a few link sections, forum sections of support, doing this could be really easy.

So... once again, my purpose is not to complain, I'm just a long time member who is concerned for wholenote/activebass and would like them to be as current as their users are.

What do you guys think? I'd like to get a discussion going if possible.

All the best,
Jesse

Of course I would liketo see lots of new updates and interviews on the front page of AB. Just getting a fully functional chat room would do me.

Often, when we chat among ourselves we say that it is the best site on the net. I believe that. For example, when Lesa was sick, she was supported by poeople from all over the planet. When Mo's family suffered their sad loss, many reached out.

Just a few minutes ago, Vern phoned me here in Australia just to wish me a happy New Year. There has got to be something pretty special about a site where you can make friends, never seen, often spoken to, who will phone across the world just to say "Hi, have a good New Year."

Yes I agree it would be nice if some things were improved, but overall I think it is a wonderful site, whatever you do DO NOT change that.

top of the list in my opinion - Chat room!

Of course we are all glad that AB is here, and many of us don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth. (old American expression - I don't know where it came from!) I have long advocated for a left handed fret board for some of us more right minded people to write "lessons" on. But that is like complaining about the color of a rudder on a cruise ship. Some of your points are much more valid. I think most people use the forums as chats. The "chat room" is a tomb from which some people never emerge.

If the "creators" of AB ever have extra time and energy I am sure that they would tend to some of your suggestions. The other thing is that these changes have to cost money. It would sure change the composure of AB if this were to trun in to a pay site. As it is, I am not sure how AB is sponsered. I am sure it is not simply a "good will" project.

It could vanish at any time and our "family" would be spread across the ineter-verse!

None of us knows how long AB will be around even.
It has become for many that the friends have become more important than the "bass" stuff. We even have a couple of "life-boat" sites to go to when it is down.

Well sorry, I am rambling here. But these are things that I thinks about now and again.

Im so glad to see such an active response to the question, becasue I asked it out of concern for the future of the site, and the response shows that others care as well.

I think the point that the life fo AB is in the forums is right on. In fact thats basically the main use these days now isnt it. I guess my only thing is that, when I first joined, (maybe 6 or 7 years ago), the lesson technology was cutting edge and AB was updated actively. Those updates have since fallen by the wayside a bit. But whats important is that I get the sense from people that that dosent really matter all that much, and that AB is still alive and well through the forums. I can understand theyre being lack of motivation to update the site, and by ALL means, we want to keep it free, But it might be nice to have one more update, to focus the site more to its current uses and make it a bit more user friendly.

What types of things do you guys think would be easy to do, yet useful to the community in its current form?

Ill get out my pet peeve, which is that I think the news section should be removed, because its old and looks bad when first veiwing the site for newcommers. It gives off the impression that the site is one of the millions thats fallen out of use, but obviously, thats just not true.

Thinking constructively, can anyone think of any other easy changes-updates?

AB needs a macromedia line builder/lesson program like that on WN - that can cater for those who would like to post some lessons for 5 string and 6 string bass players.
A vote on the matter may get some response and an increase of traffic to the sites is surely worthwhile for the site owners/creators.

My Vote is AYE..

do I get a second?

Geoff :-)

Yo Jesse,
Hey, I hear you loud and clear. I really Love ActiveBass.Com. However, this site is free! So what gets updated and what dose not is not form me to say. Oh, I do have some issues, like some of the things that you talked about.
From my understanding AB/WN were school projects and I for one am very happy that both of them are still here and up and running for FREE use!
I can tell that you are not complaining, just voicing yout thoughts and what should be done to keep both places more usable and updated. :^D
