Bass/amp making a bizarre noise

This is going to be a completely uninformed post, cause I know almost nothing about bass guitars or amps.

Anyways, I borrowed my friends bass and another friends small practice guitar amp (not high quality and not a bass amp), and Ive been teaching myself to play. The bass is an Ibanez of some source. Every now and then, the amp will start making a constant-pitch humming noise. The noise will sometimes fluctuate if I mess with the guitar, and will even stop if I hit a string, but not always. Today, it happened in a peculiar way. I was playing, and when I hit the lowest string, it would make the normal noise briefly and then start to become extremely distorted. It did this a couple of times and then it started doing the noise thing, but during this time, the higher up strings played normally (until the constant noise came in).

Unplugging the cable on both ends, turning off the amp, then firing it all back up didn't stop the noise.

Does this have anything to do with the two 9 volt batteries in the back of the guitar?

I think my friend had the same problem from time to time, but I don't remember exactly what his problem was. I just remember a couple of times where he would get a bizarre sound and he would mention the 9v batteries. In case this isn't the same problem he had, I don't want to bother him with it. Id rather return it fixed if possible.

Isolating the problem, as others have said should be the first thing. With that said . . .

From what you are describing it seems to me a good guess would be the amp. You say it is a cheep and small guitar amp, not a bass amp. Also , that the noise happens when you hit the lower notes on the bass. The hum you hear while not playing is mostlikely the electronics on the bass since it stops when you start to play. Well, it does not stop but rather get covered up by the notes.

My guess, a weak speaker that can not, nor is it designed to, handle the lower frequincies and an amp that can not handle the output of the active electronincs from the bass.

One other guess, since your freind had the same thing happening to him, maybe he just blew the speaker. Young, new players tend to like cranking the volume.

Neel,

The distortion effect was found due to incorrectly setting up a valve amp and it was used constructively and made a part of the music scene. If all else fails could you utilise this constant pitch hum, rather like a bagpipe drone -you just might have a new sound !

I have a Peavey Nitrobass head and it has a button that you push in for playing an active bass through it, and the button is out for passive basses. So, and this is only a guess, perhaps you are trying to put an active bass through an amp that is simply not designed to take it.

It is not a good idea to put a bass through a guitar amp, [or a guitar through a home hi-fisystem] as the speakers are different and not interchangeable.

Also don't face the amp while you are playing.

I really think this is one for the electronic experts.

Good luck

Hey guys. I am at home for thanksgiving break, and I got to play the bass on a normal bass amp. The problem happened again at one point, and when it did, switching to a different cable immediately fixed it. Thanks for the input.
