Time to fess up

Much to the ridicule of my work colleages, mostly female, I bought the new best of albums by The Sugababes and Girls Aloud. They wonder how I can like Queens of The Stone Age and Primal Scream AND shiny girly pop. You might've heard 'Push the button' buy the 'babes which IMO was the best single of 2005.

I dunno whether Girls and 'babes mean much to you folks outside Europe but they're pure pop but IMO, they've both made some damned good singles. Thing is, current girl groups seem to have more cojones than their male counterparts who by and large are all pretty sappy. I also think Cristina Aguilera and Britney have made some quality pop songs. Above all I have a very soft spot for Rachel Stevens. Not only is she hot but she's also put out some top tunes like LA X.

Anyone else here up for a bit of fluff?

I can't give any of these music performers any credit other than their pretty looks and voices. The real credit needs to go to the producers that create and form the sound of the songs that we hear. They are the actual artists in this group of songs.

If there is a group/person/song that I like and every other person in the world hates, I still like what I like and no one elses opinion counts toward or against what I enjoy. It works the same in the other direction also. You may like it while I don't. For intance, I still enjoy listening to "Dave, Dee, Dozey, Beaky, Mick and Tich". Go figure, I'm just weird! (smile)

A very small percentage of the 'pop' genre does survive the test of time. For example, some of The Monkees tunes are actually pretty good, even though they were a 'packaged' pop act. The vast majority of it will fade away never to be heard again (and deservedly so).

As to the 'fess up' part I have to admit I've started to really like some of 'Donna Summers' disco material. Shameful I'll admit. In my defense I'll say it's mainly because I enjoy playing the bass lines.

No need to take the shame. 'I feel love' was a groundbreaking track in the dance/electronic genre cos of the sequencing used for the keyboard bass line.

I'm not familiar with that track, I'll have to listen to it. How much of her work was done with keys for the bass? My favorites, such as 'Ring My Bell', 'Hot Stuff' and 'Bad Girls' seem to feature bass guitar. That or the keys do a very convincing imitation.

Classic Rock has always been my favorite music but most of it is based around a bass riff. It makes it almost necessary to learn the riff note for note. Dance, Reggae, some R&B and Funk, on the other hand are based on a traditional, repetative bass groove. That's why I enjoy playing these genres so much. I can come up with my own groove and run with it.
