Amplification

Hi folks
made my playing debut last week with my band Pact at a buskers/jam session but my 65 watt Ashdown amp was at its max and I think I need to look at a more powerful amp/set up for future events/gigs.We played in a decent sized pub and the existing amp just about managed but if I needed any more it wasnt there.
What would you recommend as a bigger rig/set up on a budget, havent got much cash and need to look for a bargain or gear that maybe isnt top brand spec but that will do a decent job.Any advice gratefully received.I play metal/classic rock and my bass is a Yamaha RBX170.Hoping to upgrade that but depends on what I can find at a reasonable price.

Can you line out the Ashdown to the board so your sound also comes out of the monitors? If not, maybe you can mic it. I have played some large rooms with a 100W combo using both of those methods.

It's kind of expensive but it's good Eden Nemesis NC115 Bass Guitar Combo Amp - 1 x 15", 250 watts. Eden has always been good for me. Tone and volume wise. They're allround awesome amps.

Hey Paul.
Well, seeing as you're in Blighty why dont you have a look at Laney amps. I've been using them for about 3 years in Studio and live in pretty bnig venues. Also when I was engineering I let the other bands use my amp much to there enjoyment. I've turned a few people onto these VERY underated amps. I use a full 300watt Stack, 1x15 and 4x10 cabs and it is amazing. They are absolutly reliable, sound great and they are cheap and if you look on Evilbay there are a fewon there now. Or if your budget can stretch to 400.oo plus Diesel money I'll bring you mine, I'm saving again for another Ampeg, only cos my Ric loves Tubes!! lol
Let me know if you're interested, maybe we can work summink out.
Steve

Low cost option; get an inexpensive DI & route a signal to the house PA. Keep your amp as a personal monitor. This is not going to solve your amp issue though, it is merely going to shift the main job to the house PA. A weak, or 'vocals only' PA will leave you in the same spot you are now in.

Best option; a good 300 watt amp & 4x10 or 1x15 cab.

Paul, Steve Fox is very good & fair to deal with. His above offer might be worth looking into.

+1 on a used cab, for low cost option. Preferrably bought from an experienced bassist. Coz they can tell you exactly what you can and can't do with the amp.

Hi Paul:
If you are playing with a drummer you shall have to go for 150 watts minimum to cut through, otherwise you shall not be heard and wreck your rig into the bargain.

Around the 200W mark you can get very reasonably priced equipment these days from Yorkville (already mentionned), Laney (already mentionned), Behringer and Hugues & Kettner. I am quite familiar with the latter, and its good strong stuff.

If you do decide to go the whole hog, I too can throughly recommend the Eden Nemesis NC210. Mine weighs in at 20 kilos for 250 watts through a 2 x 10 with tweeter. Even with 2 guitars and a drummer I have never had to push it past 2/3 of its power.

Good luck!
