Drugs and Alcohol at Rehearsal - Yes, No or Don't Care

Sorry this is kinda long.
Here is a situation I was in recently.

So I put an ad on the local internet musician message board and I'm asked to try out for a band. This sounds like a cool situation and I spend the time to learn a handful of new songs, I feel pretty confident and off I go to try out.

I walk in and as I'm setting up the singer offers me a beer. Not my thing and I pass.

Things start out well, tunes are rocking, I'm having a good time. But as the night goes on the Singer has knocked off 3 or 4 beers and the words are starting to slur and stupid comments are coming out of his mouth. I'm starting to think this ain't for me.

We play until our time is up at the rehearsal space and head out to the parking lot to talk. Soon the Guitar Player is lighting up a joint and offering it around. But what really gets me is that his 13 or 14 year old daughter is with him. Now this really isn't my thing and I say, hey it was cool, thanks, but it's getting late, I got to go.

On the way home I know this isn't for me and really don't want to be in this situation again, so I go home and edit the to the Internet ad to include, please no drunks or drugs.

The next day I get a scathing curse filled email message from the singer rambling on about the the Alcohol and Drug part I added to the ad. That this was directly aimed at spreading rumors about him. That I shouldn't judge people and that this was Rock n Roll there was no way I could play in a Hard Rock/Metal Band without having to deal with situation like this. He went on about how he had heard from other musician that I was like this and that I was an untight, lying, flake anyway.

Oh well. Guess that's the way it goes.
Now I have been in many bands that have existed with nothing more than a beer or two when we are playing out at a bar. I made a choice not to working in the situation that I had seen. Was I wrong? I'm I really out of touch with the world?

So the simple question....
Drugs and Alcohol at rehearsal.
Yes, No, Don't Care

Im sure there are/were many musicians who wouldnt rehearse without them. Although musicians and drugs have a had a close, unstable relationship through time, it depends on you and the band. Its not my thing at all, and its obviously not yours - so dont feel bad, its personal opinion.

first of all marijuana isnt really a drug. it more of a herb. and i have nothing against lightin up a dobbie before practice. theres nothing really bad about bud. if anything it makes your band sound better. dont disagree with me unless you have sparked up a joint before jammin. if you never have you truely havent had the FULL rock and roll experience before.

Happy smokin,
Jake(:

ive smoked before practice, and as much as id like to say it made me better, it made me lose focus, and mad me sound horrible. i have no problem with other members smoking up before practice, i just try and make it a habit to do it after practice so my playing isnt effected. On the other hand, i think it does wonders for me when im just jamming by myself, but i suppose thats a whole different story. Drugs have different effects on everyone, so no matter what there will always be people that insist, and people that are completly against it, but you did what made u comfortable, and thats all that really matters.

It's odd, because people tolerate these things differently. I always like a drink before I go on stage, though I've played stone cold sober plenty of times. One drink makes me a little calmer and less self-conscious. Smoke, though, doesn't work for me, as it messes with my sense of time.

However, most drummers I've ever played with were fans of the herb (some where hardly ever without it), and it never messed with their sense of time. So go figure.

pot certainly is a drug... don't kid yourself. its not as severe as cocaine or ecstasy or meth, but it definetly is a drug.

all weed does is alter your perspective... for some people that means new creative depths and cool new ideas, for others it means a night sitting on your couch with junk food and a sh*t-eating grin.

personally i enjoy pot, however, i know that people are more important than drugs, so if my buddies weren't cool with it, i wouldnt bring it or the effect to rehersals

In my band I would say, Beer yes, whiskey no, pot save for after, all other drugs no sirree. Really though, it all comes down to what you are comfortable with and wether or not the substances are getting in the way of the music...
