The Bass Company

I just bought a new bass. Literally like 20 minutes ago. Its made by The Bass Company, its their new model with the humbucking musicman pickup. Anyone had any experience with this bass or this company? I am super interested in what quality of bass i'm getting.

Hey Matthew, congrats on the purchase of your new bass. I know absolutely nothing about TBCs . . . But, if you already bought it, isn't kinda late to ask about them ;^}

Post pics when you get it and write a review after you have test driven it.

Oh I don't normally do a "shoot first ask questions later" kind of attitude. But I guess you can say i had a G.A.S. attack the moment i saw it. It looks like it might be a good bass. This is the one i bought:

Mine has a cherry stain.

I play it live every weekend and am very happy with it. It was well set up when it arrived. I swapped out the rounds that came with it for a set of medium flats for a warmer tone.

Pete what medium flats do you use. I use the D'Addario Half Rounds on my Warwick.
Love those strings.

Hey Rog.

I have D'Addario medium gauge .050-.105 flats on the TBC and D'Addarrio superlight flats on my 65 hollowbody .040-.095

I have had really good luck with D'Addario strings.

I use Rotosound tapewrapped flats on my Wish. I may change them out to D'Addario in a couple of months.

Plus, once I get the string adapter for my Steinberger and can use single-ball instead of double-ball strings, I want to put a set of D'Adarrio rounds or half rounds on my Steinberger.

How does your bass sound when you slap the half rounds?

Slapping flats doesn't really work, so I want the Steinie to have nice sounding strings for slap playing.

Hi Pete,
I'm not usually a good slapper, but if I'm listening to some Meters I get a little urge. On the warwick with the Half rounds I just crank the treble more then most usually would, and it has a nice warm slap pop sound. Like a Larry Graham tone....not ultra brite like flea.

I love D'addarios. I have a set of regular light Chromes(flats) on my pbass. Plus it's a U.S. made string. I figure if I can't afford the American basses I want, might as well support the pick-up and string companies! lol

Hey Pete,
It is nice to see your posts. I especially love the pic of your ax. Talking about woodys I was wondering if it was swamp ash?
I ask because I am interested in how the swamp ash sounds and how heavy it is?
I recently discussed this with Andy West and the variable sound he got from his swamp ash alembic recording on the Dixie Dregs album
Dregs of the Earth.
I may order a custom swamp ash body to replace the body on my Fender Jazz.
Let me know what you think.

Take care,

Dan

Hey Dan,

Yeah I haven't posted much lately. Life was a little overloaded for a while; plus AB was really slow. Every three years the Federal government does an extremely thorough review of the public transit system I work for. Preparing for these audits requires a lot of time, and the actual on-site audit is stressful. The good news is they didn't find any issues with my area so I'm good for another three years.

I got pretty grumpy during this process... glad it's over.

The bass body is made from Swamp Ash but the body is chambered to reduce the weight. As such, it doesn't feel any heavier than most solid-body basses I've played; however, I haven't actually weighed it. I think the bass sounds great.

It has active electronics and medium gauge flats. I get a very warm tone with the flats which I prefer (at least this week... lol) to the brighter tone it had with rounds.

I like the way it sounds and I have gotten a lot of very nice comments about the bass' appearance and tone from guitar players and other bass players.

Back to your original question... since the TBC's body is chambered I don't know how heavy a solid body replacement body for your jazz would be. I'll weigh this bass sometime tonight and shoot you a PM.

Pete
