If you're more like the rest of us mere mortals who have to live within our budget I've been drooling over the Godin Freeway 5 (passive) or a Yamaha BB415. I also know there are lots of diehard Ibanez users out there.

take all the money and buy a really good 5 string.i don't see why anyone would want an acoustic bass. i had one and it ended up living in the corner. an electric can do it all and sounds better.IMO

For the acoustic bass I'd go with a Takamine.... they've got a solid history for acoustic instruments.... you could try one of the Yamaha RBX series basses for an electric... I've got one and I'm quite happy with it

fretless, did they?). What about a TRB-5 or if money is no object a
5P? I would probably also look seriously at a Warwick Streamer.

For an acoustic, I guess it would really *have* to be a Martin. Touch
pricey though.

You're good. Yamaha didn't make a TRB-6 fretless, I had the frets taken out after I bought my Conklin Bill Dickens (more strings). I would never get around to playing it otherwise, since the Conklin more than suits all my fretted needs. Thanks for the input, I want to save my money and get something really, really good. Most of the people who responded provided the usual stock of instruments like Fenders(gag!) and Ibanez. I was looking more at higher end instruments like Laklands, Warwicks, Taylors (acoustic)- just thought someone out there would know something I didn't.
