life, college, job, car, questions

Alright now, I'm having a hard time and I'm not sure if this is going to turn into more ranting then it is a question but we will definatly see! But anyways, I need some opinions, advice, whatever you can give me. BTW, this has not one thing to do with music.

I have this car that doesn't run very well a lot of the time, but I am not an expert so I shouldn't know. I am going to college at the end of this month. I'm going to be living at home, it's half an hour each way. So that's an hour of driving. I have 18 credits, which is plenty I figure. I also work at Subway, and I plan on keeping that job.

My problem is this, I don't trust driving that car an hour every day, especially in winter. I'm really sick of trying to work on it and my dad doesn't even want to look at it anymore cuz everytime we turn around there is somethig else wrong. I think maybe the wires going to the spark plugs are shot, or else it's my transmission, cuz when I go uphill it shakes like never before, and has a hard time upshifting then, so I have to coast uphills pretty much. I fixed my power stearing just today, that's real nice to have.

I am trying to decide if I should buy a brand new car with warranty, 10 year/10000 mile they say. I really like the sound of a reliable car. The heating system in my car right now may not be enough to defrost the windows in the winter I'm afraid also. I don't know if it would be a dumb thing to do. I wrote my manager today saying I need 15 hours a week once school starts. I don't know how much homework I will have so I hope it works out. That should be enough for payments, gas, and that's it!

If you were in my position would you rather drive to school in a piece of crap sometimes car, not have any payments, have the same job, possibly more time for school. Or would it be better to have a reliable car, with payments that I would have a hard time with, and squeez in homework time. I'm so confused, lol. I don't know what to expect. Any advice on what YOU would do would be great. This got a little lengthy, sorry. I need some opinions though.

Thanks, LaYona

Dont buy a new car! You're not in the position for that. However, it sounds like your car is about to fall apart! You might hink about getting a cheap used car. Just something that will last for a few years until you can afford the time to work and hence a better car. I see a lot of cars in the paper and whatnot that "need work", you may be able to upgrade the whole while just making a repair that your current may need anyway.

That's true, the cars in the paper thet 'need work' may have only one of the problems that my car does, and I could get thet fixed and it would be no different then wrenching on mine. hmmm, some reason that never dawned on me.... Thanks!

Layona, first of all - congrats on the school thing. Whatever you must do to keep that going should be first priority. Starting is wonderful; finishing is EVERYTHING.

Two of my kids faced the same situation.

Here is my advice. (based on the fact that you are probably NOT rich. If you are; ignore this)

1. Don't buy any car unless you MUST have it for the commute. After school, priorities may change.

2. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy a new car. (I am well in my 50's and always get an excellent used car with 30k or less. They are THOUSANDS less.) You can still get good reliability and decent warranties! My Honda now (a 2000) is fully covered for two more years.

3. If possible, get a Corolla, Sentra, Civic, Subaru or some other used (up to 100K if you have to) car from a REPUTABLE dealer. It will get you another 100K. Check out Consumer Reports or Edmunds on line to see how well these babies run and how reliable they are.

My kids drive an older Altima and Sentra with no reliability problem. Total spent for both cars is UNDER 10K.

Well, good luck to you.

Thanks! I don't trust anybody when it comes to them selling one of their cars because I always think there is so much more wrong that they won't tell me. I guess that's where the word reputable comes from eh? :P Food for thought you gave me, that's always a good thing, thanks for taking the time to respond.

I miss playing the baritone, it's been a good 3 months almost now. I had a school owned one, it sure is a fun one to play, heck of a lot more fun then a trumpet!

I had a dream that I had to play trumpet last night, it didn't work so well, but then again I had another one where I couldn't shut my mouth cause my teeth were in the way! ouch!

LaYona, I think the advice you have already received is right on. A used car is a better deal all around. I have always bought used cars and never had any serious problems with them. If you buy a used car from a reputable dealer and arrange for a mechanical inspection from an independant garage you shouldn't be taking a big risk.

Yeah, I agree, I would feel a lot better with a used car also, especially at this point in my life. Used cars, here I come! :P

Oh, I guess I just like to make things harder for myself then they need to be. Some reason I never really even thought about that as an option, hmmmmm....
