Gotta be both for optimal performance. Even if your fretboard hand can hammer on and pull off the whole song it will be so much better with the picking hand in there to make it grunt. nowhatimean.

I am gonna have to say your left hand (fret hand), if you lost your right you still could play with your left by hammering or freting with middle and index and plucking with your pinky and ring. And i know everyone is just gonna blurt out both but I suppose the best you could do would be to be proficient with both hands and both feet and do some wacky hammering with you nose, though you might look a little silly.

But you also can play a song with just right hand, if there's just notes E A D and G. One time at a gig i played a song with just the right hand doing other stuff with the left one. Actually i had forgot the right notes so i made up a new bassline at the gig. I had practiced only once with that band.

Right hand technique(aka picking hand). Most of the left hand technique in the world won't work if the right hand can't keep time.

You use the two hands when playing no? So they are equally important, altough I'd say that you can still get away with "poor" right hand technique(only one finger for example) than left hand, since nobody want rattling and noisy fretting.

I'd be pretty s*** if I used one finger on my RH!!!

It was three little Asian boys. I did pay them handsomely- 14 pence each. They loved it anyway. You could tell by their exprerssions. It's almost as if they understand.....

And their expressions as well.
