FINGERS!!! I use fingers all the time.. only time i ever use a pick is when i jam on a guitar. I think the pick should be for guitar not for bass... the only time i have seen a necessity for a pick is when you want to get that really good muted double pick sound like John Entwistle does on a few songs.. I think Tommy can you hear me.. (I dont have Tommy yet cause I havent seen it in stores and when I do see it i dont have the money...) I dont remember the song exactly but I remember it sounded wicked cool witht he muting and stuff.

HEY JOHN I ALWAYS USE MY FINGERS. I NEVER LEARNED HOW TO USE A PICK NOR DO I HAVE ANY DESIRE TO. I THINK THAT YOU GET A BETTER FEEL FOR WHAT YOU ARE PLAYING BY USING YOUR FINGERS. I DON'T DOWN ANYBODY FOR USING A PICK THOUGH. THERE ARE DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS.

When I first learnt bass I was faced with this very same question. You have to make up your own mind based on several factors like what feels most comfortable, what sounds better etc. I chose to use fingers despite the blisters because is sounded better.

I ask because I was a fingers only player. 20 years ago at the age of 17 I had an accident involving my right hand. Even though I have played bass exclusivly, I have gotten the attitude from people that i can't be a "real" bass player because I use a pick.

I mostly use my fingers but I do at times use a pick when that is the right sound. With players like Chris Squire, Joe Osborne and Carol Kaye all using a pick sometimes a pick is the only thing that sounds right. A pick with a chorus or flanger is a real cool sound too. I sometimes use my thumb to pluck and palm mute.if that is the tone that's needed.

Fingers. I learned the bass with a pick (back in the day when I was a die-hard Megadeth, Ozzy, and Metallica fan) but my brother encouraged me to try and play with my fingers. I hated it at first because it was so much slower but as the callousses formed and my fingers got used to it I was able to play the same speed as with a pick. These days I can't imagine playing with a pick. With fingers you are much faster, the sound is better and you have a wider range of techniques available to you. You have a much more intimate connection with your instrument when you play it with your fingertips.

i use fingers to, becouse i'm much faster with them and it looks better to play with the fingers ;-)

I use both..Depends on the song I am playing, and what sound I want.

I like finger using... just cause i feel the bass more... and i feel closer to it(sounds corny i know) but i'd rather use fingers then a piece of plastic... your hand is an awsome tool. gotta use it.
