Painful fingers?

I was jamming with some friends Wed evening, and didn't notice until they started screaming that my fingertips were NOT happy with me... I don't have huge callouses built yet, but this is bothersome. My index finger still feels odd.
Is there anything I can do to get those callouses in place properly so that I can keep going and not have to switch to drums just to stay in the action?

Your body is trying to tell you something..listen to it...put down the bass for a day or so...take something for inflamation, and see how it feels after that..:o)

The bass is in the shop anyway (getting the action corrected, it was starting to get high). However I was just cruising the forum archives, and I tend to think this is just shy of blistering. I have played hard before, but never this hard, and now I think I know the result. Any advice for building thos all important callouses?

Large vats of hot sand. Stick yer hands in there and they'll get tough.

Just kidding. Don't try that unless you're a Shinto monk.

Bare-handed rock climbing, perhaps? Also, avoid soaking in Palmolive Liquid; your weekly manicure doesn't help. (Try playing after yer shift as a dishwasher--that REALLY sucks!)

But seriously: Play, practice, rehearse. Nothing else works the muscles in your hand like playing bass (stole that from a prev lesson). And, playing till yer fingers bleed really cranks the chicks!

True, let's make it better.
Wait it's natural healing than start playing again. Try to keep a 180 degree angle between your right hand and forearm and play with proper technique. And don't put the strap too low... Stop playing when u feel any pain (unless it's a good paying gig).

:-)

Better now?

real world-put super glue if your skin breaks and take a few advils for any pain bacause u need your money, don't you? Oh, and learn how to use a pick...

Pain is a sign of a problem. STOP playing until you find out what causes it, and then correct it. Physical pain can lead to serious problems. What you *really* mean is that to get better you have to overcome MENTAL pain.

STOP PLAYING IMMEDIATELY.

I went through a very serious episode of "Trigger Finger" last summer that almost required surgery. I cannot play bass as much as an hour now without the appearance of pain (in my 50 year old fingers that don't respond like they did 30 years ago). Pace yourself. Build up strength slowly. Quit BEFORE it starts to hurt. You run the risk of permanant damage to the tendons and ligaments of your hand. That's some bad a** sh*t to deal with.

I would rather being playing bass than just talking about it. I miss it.

Either the pain is from fatigue, or strain or both.

Chances are you haven't injured yourself by playing bass. That kind of injury takes years to surface.

mateo.
