A piccolo bass is just a bass with strings tuned an octave higher. The gauges of strings that I put on my bass to make it a piccolo were .020in G, .032in D, .042in A, .052in E. D,Addario makes a set of piccolo gauge strings that you can order from guitar center's website, this strings fit may 34in scale bass perfectly. The only changes you might want to make if you convert an old bass to a piccolo, is raise the nut to reduce a possible buzz, but that is just if your realy picky. I am also looking for piccolo bass music if anyone knows where to find some (All I have found is stuff by Stu Hamm). I hope that helps you.
P.S. I would send a picture of my piccolo bass but it isn't nearly as cool as roberts

With a piccolo bass you can play melody lines and chordal stuff that is usually just in the realm of the guitarist. Why shouldn't bassists have access to all that stuff. Plus, and here's the real big advantage, you can still play usuing your usual 4 string bass techniques - slap, pop, thumb, harmonics all just the way you would usually play them - just in a different register.
You can also get tenor basses (usually strung ADGC) Stanley Clarke and Vic Wooten, amongst others, play these. Are these people stupid? I think not.
Cheers
