Big Rock Boom

Hey Dudes and Dudettes,

I am in serious need of upgrading my amplification. The thing is, these days I'm usually playing heavy rock music. I've always been more of a funk/fusion guy but now I find myself in need of some serious power, but I still want the warmth and tone that makes the bass sound great. I don't just want a wall of low-end pain. It's got to have that great warmth and tone as well. Does anyone have any advice? I've heard great things about new ampeg cabs, and I really liked some of those new Mesa heads, but I'm still at a loss right now. Thanks!

Hey...
Well,I tried out a Carvin R600...plenty-o-juice there....and for the bux,I think it's hard to beat !
Warmth,tone...kick in the guts THWACK...I could get pretty much all the tone and sounds I wanted !
I know for funk and slap sound,I messed with the compression feature and...WOW !!!!
I ran them thru my Eden cabs.

They also make a R1000....even more power !!!

I know there's plenty of opinions on amp preference here...this is just my 2 bits !
:P
Peace Ed

Yeah, I agree, EVERYTHING Carving makes is the best bang for buck because everything is direct from Carvin. They are great.

You might opt for a bass preamp/poweramp rackhead instead of an all in one amphead, and then you can chose the poweramp with the wattage you want now, and if you want more power later on, then you can just buy a different poweramp.
A really good bass preamp will last you practically forever, and poweramps are very low cost per watt as compared to the cost of an all in one amphead.
There are good bass preamps made by;
Peavey--Ampeg--BBE--Demeter--Alembic--Ashly--EBS--Warwick--Aguilar--Eden--Gallien-Krueger--Soundsmith--SWR

In your quest, explore the differences between a "ported" cabinet and a "sealed" cabinet. I'll not get into trade-offs, but will observe two of many, many aspects:

* "ported" cabinets can be smaller/lighter

* "ported" cabinets can be "boomy" (resonate/peak at certain low frequencies, much like a tuning fork)

You may care to mosey by talkbass.com (but be sure to keep stoppin' by here!). They have a forum specifically for amps.
