Deans about it. Hamer made them (still might) and you can buy kits to build one from warmoth.

Thanks. I checked the Warmoth site, but I didn't find the 8's anywhere. I'll contact them and ask specifically. Looks like good materials regardless.

You just need a special bridge and eight tuners. The rest of the stuff to buy is all standard four string parts.

They have a Carlo Robelli 8 string at my local Sam Ash for a little over $300 and it sounds pretty good to me~Josh

Being new to bass, I'm not familiar with Robelli equipment. Does it compare well with the Dean?

I've never played an 8 string Dean and the Deans I have played didn't sound or play all that great so I don't really feel right commenting about them~Josh

The Dean Rhapsody 8 string basses are the nicest reasonable priced 8 string that I have found. There are a number of really nice 8 string basses built but they are quite expensive; Alembic, Pedulla and others in that price range.

After viewing the Warmoth site, I figure the least you could spend on an eight string from them would be around 600 dollars, less the finish. So I think your best option would be the Dean, as its much better built than the Carlo Robelli basses (on a whole at least, because I haven't actually played the 8 string from them).

Schecter makes an 8-string bass but im not sure on price. I would say it would be very reasonable being a Schecter.

the 12 string is the same concept of a 12-string guitar except it is 3 harmonized strings on the 12string bass instead of 2 harmonized strings as is on the 12string guitar. Crazy eh

Gotta love the growl you get from the 12 string. The 12 is actually the reason I'm looking into getting an 8. The three strings are a bit much for me to get used to at present. I figured the 8 would be a logical transition instrument. Until then...I'll keep hammering away at the 12.
