If you are looking for a preamp with the least coloration a mic preamp is a way to go. ART makes a whole line of tube mic preamps,TUBE MP, that are affordable, useful and have excellent fidelity. Some of the newer models have a VU meter and even a good quality compressor. You will still need to get an EQ for live work to deal with stage/room differences.

True.
Anthony Jackson (why would he want to "color" the tone of his fodera) uses a high end mic preamplifier.

I agree! I pre-amp with an art tube pro thru my svt head. I think they work great! It even works for my ovation acoustic!

Demeter preamps are considered to be pretty colorless for an outboard unit. Once you put a preamp into the signal path there will be some color added, even if it's set flat.

I used to have a J bass set up with pickups direct to jack wiring - unusable without EQ. You end up coloring it anyway.

I'm sorry, I meant an onboard preamp. If a preamp will color the sound regardless, what is the your opinion on the best onboard other than bartolini, emg, basslines?
