Bass amp line-out to PA system?

I've got a Fender Bassman 25, with a 1/4" "line-out" jack (in addition to effects in/out and tuner out). Can I plug this directly into a PA system? In looking at the Bassman's schematic, the "line-out" is after the amp's pre-amp circuitry, before the power-amp. I'm worried that the signal level in the "line-out" would be a lot higher than my bass's 1/4" output jack which would normally plug-in to the PA.

What I'd like to do is use the Bassman 25 as a "monitor" (small church gig), and connect the line-out to a stomp-box compressor (Digitech Bass Squeeze), then to the PA, all with 1/4" plugs. I want the compressor to avoid blowing little 6" PA speakers in the ceiling (sigh).

This will work fine.

Two minor comments. First, you might consider putting your compressor in your own EFX loop, so what you hear is similar to what's in the PA.

Second, if those little speakers were installed by a "professional contractor" then they will probably be able to handle a well mixed signal, including your bass. If the speakers are just small stereo speakers, then you should be careful.

I've got a DigiTech "Bass Squeeze" dual-band stomp-box compressor. Hate it ("sustain" aspects) - I'm getting a limiter for between the bass and amp that I've got high hopes for. In thinking, I probably won't need the compressor since it's just the "peaks" I have to worry about. Also, I'll hear more what the PA will be producing this way as you suggest.

FYI - PA was professionally installed, but a speaker has been blown by another bass player at least once.

Input:
Bass to Compressor to SansAmp (or Direct Box) to XLR to PA System.

You can adust the SansAmp's level down to prevent speaker blow-up on you Bassman. Just advise the PA operator to bring you us in the house.

hope this helps.

*NICE* picture. Looks like you've got a Spector...

Anyway, hope to get a SansAmp, pod, or something beyond a "stomp-box" at some point. My primary goal was trying to figure-out if the "line-out" on the back of my Bassman 25 was REALLY safe to plug into a PA or mixer, rather than plugging in a raw bass (or SansAmp like you've got).

The singal strenght from your line out should be fine, that's what it's made for.

Why not put go bass->compressor-> amp->line out to PA?

I struggle as well with the confines of a church gig, but I use a much bigger rig...and I mic my cabinets with a kick drum mic, to boot! I tried the line out thing to a di box to the board for awhile, but I unplug when I'm not actually playing (active pickups, don't want to drain the battery unnecessarilty) and the sound guys aren't too quick, so when they don't turn me down there's this loud harsh "pop"...this way, I turn off my speakers, and unplug, no noise...plus, to my ears, the rig sounds better miked up. Maybe one day I'll get a nice pre-amp, but until then, this APEX125 I'm using will do just fine!
