Great Bass Player Quotes

One of my favorite quotes is from fellow Active Bass member and fellow Vancouver musician Kerry Galloway!

"A good bass player needs to have an uncanny grasp of the completely obvious..."

Man I love that one!

I just wanted to make a correction to a quote that was attributed above to RANDY Jackson:

"Slapping. The ketchup of the bass world."

It was a lament that even in the slowest of ballads you could here inevitably hear someone slap a note, in the writer's opinion pointlessly and intrusively. It was also a comment on the ubiquity of slapping in all kinds of music that the person quoted didn't think was conducive to slapping.

I'm pretty sure that quote by ANTHONY Jackson, and not Randy Jackson, appeared in an issue of Bass Player magazine more than a decade ago.

Later,

Glen

Reminds me of another quote, from a Tom Robbins book (an author, but not a bass player as far as I know):

"There are 2 kinds of people in this world: those who think there are two kinds of people in this world, and those who don't..."

A famous jazz guitarist would tour solo and pick

He got a young college bassist one night. Up the
neck, down the neck...the bassist spent half the
night playing high up in thumb position.

After the gig, the guitarist said to the young
bassist "Man, you sound great. You and I should
get us a bass player and do some gigs".

When I first started out, a guitarist/bassist once said to me, "Hey, did you get a Fender Jazz yet? You might as well get one now. Jazz basses are like Les Paul guitars, sooner or later, you're gonna have to deal with one."

I had a teacher (pianist, BTW) who said "A

Frankly, I never liked him much.
