active vs. passive

Hi everyone,
I've played the bass for about a year now and I was wondering:
What is the difference between active pickups/basses and passive pickups/basses?

Any help would be appriciated / Kalle

what i know is that active ones have a preamp in it and it alows you to make some equaliztion before going to the amp it self. i guess some preamps can go to 25dB on 3 bands.
i'm not sure if i'm right. fell free to correct me.

It adjusts (boosts or cuts) ranges like treble, mid and low BEFORE the signal gets amplified..

hence PRE amp.

yes. the preamp is in a space in the back of the bass with a batery that has to be replaced from time to time.

lemme tell u the sound difference between the two...........active really sounds more 'electric'. like if u scrape a pick down the string.........active is much more sensitive to the touch too.....when ur in a rock band, i prefer active, or even funk or groove......but when it comes too the more suttle stuf.....passive rules all.......this is mainly cuz passive has a more suttle sound...........i kind of think of them like this...

active = wild flea in the jungle

passive = smooth jazz beatnik

most active guitars/basses will need a battery change about once a year+/-.
you'll definatly know when it dies (bass distorts, or suddenly has little to no volume).

personally I like a more passive tone, the notes are much clearer and I like the highs and lows...I have an active 5 string Peavey and an Ibanez, however on my amp I usually plug into the passive port.

Is there a simple way to tell the difference? Like something to do with the output being at the bottom of your bass, or something else by just looking at the bass you can tell whether its active or passive?
