Women Bass Players

I have been playing bass for 8 years now, and have met only 2 other women bass players.. Most people are " Amazed" to see me not only playing bass, but doing lead vocals and being the " Front Man"...and not just the token " Cleavage Showing Chick Singer" or "Tamborine Shaker"...
Ladies!!! Let me hear from you!!! I know your out there!!!

and lets not forget Mary Huff, of Southern Culture on the Skids. She gets up there in little redneck 50's dresses, piled high beehive hair, her danos, silvies and harmony's, and wails. her basses all have this great smooov sound, totally soul. give a listern to her keepin the guys together on "Dirt Track Date" and "8 piece box", "Walleyed" and "Daddy was a preacher, mama was a go-go girl" (on which she sings too, with a terrifically strong country girl voice)

Drain STH is a good band I saw them at ozzfest last year. This year I believe they are on first stage. Here where I am in Indiana there are not many female musicans let alone any bass players. I only know of one and she's in illinois. Damned shame I like to play with the woman. Thier egos don't seem to be as inflated as the guys.

Now I may just be a jack-ass for saying this, but in my experience, the interest just doesn't seem to be there. Most girls I know want to play drums or guitar. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, or maybe the 'ladies' in my area are weird, but it just doesn't seem like a common thing to do for a female musician. Not that it's bad for a female to play bass. The only I know is extremely talented. In fact, she taught me a few stuff! So I guess It's all what feels good.

yah. I see that. I know a few girls who say "ooh. you play a bass? wow, i wish i could do that." I think some women are intimidated by the fact that music appears to be a dude thing. Where i live, there are two fem bass players and two fem drummers.. that do any playing around town. i have yet to meet a chick that plays guitar (would be nice.. could have a band with two wimmink i think). I think the interest is there for them to play, but a lot of times they get put off by the guys, or they are scared to ask someone to teach them, or whatever. I do get mostly good responses when i tell people i play, but there's the few jerks that say things like "why don't you sing instead" or something. (truth is, i can't carry a tune.. heeh)

my friend and I want to start a band. wish we had a drummer and guitarist. If it happen to be a girl then, that would be way cooler than any guy. Actually I would prefer a girl anything. But there aren't ANY fem musicians here. as a matter of fact there is a shortage of muscians period.

What I have to say is about women bass players is rather complex so bare with me on this okay...
Not only do they rock hard but, I think they are all very sexy, and there should be a ton more of them. Ladies encourage every other female you know start up!
Hope that wasn't too in depth for anyone. Hope that wasn't something we can all enjoy.

thank you, muh ha ha,

Man its people like you that make most females have nothing to do with bands or music. If I want to jam I don't care about how hot the person looks I'm just making sure I don't screw up.

To clear up any confusion:

That was not exactly a serious post.
I find any woman involved in music to be attractive. The fact that she likes to do something creative shows that she has something to say to the world.
And I will play music with anyone regardless of race, creed, sex, or any title that is put against them, its just that when its when I find a women that plays bass, I just have to try hard not to fall in love her... Is there something wrong with that. If there is I would like to apologize to any one I offended I was just trying to give a smile to all the female bass players on the list. Excuse for trying to make your day better.

I too am a female playing bass... but for some reason, with our band trying to find a singer, and lead guitarist, they seem to shy away when they find out that besides me, the rythm guitarist is also a female. Our drummer (who is male) takes most of the calls, and people sound intersted until he says my wife plays guitar, the interest then changes to "Oh... ummm... well... uh, I'll ummm call you back" I guess a lot of people don't think girls can rock. We've resorted to this add out of frustration...

Hi Jenny!! Sure, happens all the time! When someone wants to talk to us after a gig, or on breaks, the guys are always approached first. When they are told to come talk to me, they are usually surprised to find I am the business manager. :0)
