King Crimson

Anyone dig them? I've only heard "In The Court of The Crimson King" and "Walking on Air", the latter being a favorite of mine.

If anyone is familiar with them, give me some song recommendations.

Crimson have three very different phases - the
late 60s/early 70s stuff as represented in your
collection already by In The Court...

Then there was the late 70s/early 80s stuff
which was much heavier - albums like Red
and Discipline.

And then from the 90s til now they've had a
revolving line up ranging from the 'double trio'
of Fripp, Belew, Bruford, Mastelotto, Levin and
Gunn, to the current version which doesn't
have Levin or Bruford in it... very technical, lots
of MIDI sounds from Trey Gunn and Fripp. My
faves are Thrak (mid 90s) and Red (early
80s), as well as the various 'Projekct' CDs,
which were side projects from a couple of
years ago...

They have a DVD out of the double trio from the early 90's that is scary! If your a John Wetton fan, the box set "The Great Deciever" has some great moments! Every phase of King Crimson has been worthwhile listening.

Exellent band! In The Court Of The Crimson King is one of my favorite albums of all time, as well as the first track on that album, 21st Century Schitzoid Man. Hard to believe that's Greg Lake (ELP) on bass!

Hi Matt,

I'm a huge Crimson fan. Seems like Crimson fans tend to be divided into groups - those who are into the super old stuff belonging to one group, and those into the newer stuff in another. But that's a generalization of course. There are some that span the three "phases" of Crimson.

I am most excited about the double-trio stuff onward (so basically all albums after VRROOM). I also like the improvisational stuff a good deal (The Projeckts and ThrakAttak). Well, that and "Three of a Perfect Pair". Crimson is complex, melodic, harmonic, dissonant, groovy - they do it all. Adrian supplies humor and fun, to an otherwise quite serious line up. But if you don't like music that consumes your brain as well as your heart, it's not for you.

The beauty of Crimson though, is that it is complex and interesting, as well as moving. So, you can hear something new in it all the time, no matter how long you've been a listener.

Personally, although I do like Yes and Rush, and other "prog" bands, I'm not sure I'd put Crimson in the same category with them. Sure, they belong together in terms of the complexity of their music. But Crimson is more ambient and more improvisational than bands like Yes or Rush. Anybody else a fan who knows what I mean?

Kyle

ps - I also really like "Walking on Air". Great bassline!
