Cool Song I Can Learn ??
While I am in the "weird" stage of learning my bass, everyone I know asks me to "PLAY THEM SOMETHING". What I know so far isn't worth playing for them b/c its all "learning stuff". My skill is improving, but its slow b/c there is so much to learn at once: Scales, notation, videos, books, tons of stuff! Even when I look for a song to learn, the bass parts aren't what they are looking for to get into it, by itself. Does anyone have a song that they can suggest that I can play that will impress my friends enough to leave me alone! One that they will recognize. I will take the time to learn it, and then I can get back to the progress of learning in peace.

Some really cool songs, easily recognizable, and not to hard to play are:
Money - Pink Floyd
Sunshine on Your Love - Cream
Sober - Tool (very easy)
Rearranged - Limp Bizkit
Spiders - System of a Down
Mudshovel - Staind
Radar Love - Golden Earring
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
Day Tripper - The Beatles
The Joker - Steve Miller Band
I could go on forever. Heh.

Louise,
The first songs I learned to play were REM songs. Don't know if you like them, but the bass lines aren't too difficult, and still teach you a lot about what a good, melodic lines sounds like. I played them for my friends (who also wanted me to "play them something") by playing along with the CD. That seemed to go over well. because they could hear where I fit into the rest of the song, so they could appreciate it more.
Peace.

The bass isn't much of a solo instrument, though. So it's a little harder to play something that people will immediately appreciate.
Some simple ideas for you though would be "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen, or "Riders on the storm" by The Doors (not really a bass guitar, but still a groovin bass line) or "Come Together" by the Beatles.
Those are basslines that are immediately recognizable. You should explain to your philistine friends that the bass is only ONE HALF of the rhythm section and without a drummer, it's not easy to appreciate what you hear.

If you like U2. Try 'With or Without You'.
The same 4 chords in the whole song!
'Papa was a rolling Stone'. Again the same line throughout the song.
'Walking on the moon' by The Police is another very simple but easily recognisable line.

That song is only cool because of what the chicks wear in the video.
