ActiveBass uses a subset of basic guitar tablature for its notation of musical examples:

Notational Elements
|
Events - Events occur on a particular string at a particular fret location, and are represented
by a number. In the example below, the first event is represented by a '3' on the fifth line down. This represents the
3rd fret on the 5th string. Events can be of many types - picks, hammer-ons (H), pull-offs (P), slides (S), bends (B), and vibrato.
Rhythm - Rhythm is denoted by measure numbers located at the bottom of each measure
and by markers ( ) indicating each beat in the measure. Events that occur above markers are on the beat.
Events that are halfway between markers are on the off-beat (and so on).
Duration - The duration of an event is indicated by trailing lines ( )
that sustain for the duration of the event. If the line sustains for the length of one beat marker, then the event is one
beat in length (i.e. a quarter note)
