Improvisation can be very simple and fun. There are a few steps to take to make your own creations sound great.
1. Know what key you're in. In this lesson, you'll be in the key of C Major, which means that none of the notes are going to be sharped or flatted. (For those of you that only read tablature and aren't sure what this means, don't worry about it.)
2. Ok, so you know you're in the key of C. You're off to a great start. In the C Major scale, there are 8 notes. Those notes are C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C. If I asked you to find the fifth of the scale, which note above do you think it would be? Come on, take a guess. It's pretty self explanatory. That's right! The G. (C,D,E,F,G; G is the fifth) Now, if I asked you to find the third, you'd say F, right? Wrong!!! E is the third, but I'm sure that's what you meant to say. :) Practice playing the root (C) the third (E) and the fifth (G) in the following exercise, then continue on to page two to continue your lesson on improv! For those of you who are real tablature junkies (nothing wrong with that) and you still have no idea what I'm talking about, the notes are in this order below: C,D,G,C mm. 2: C,G,D,C.
