The first step to learning a contrapuntal piece on the electric bass is to break the piece in half. Tackle one line at a time. We'll begin with the fretting hand which happens to be the L.H. in right-handed bassists. For you lefties out there, just use your R.H. which would be your fretting hand.
L.H. Technique - the notes for the lower toned portion of the song are played with the fretting hand; most commonly the L.H.
To tap a note bring the end of a finger down on the note so that it rings out clearly. It is the same concept as a hammer-on except that you are not moving from another position. The recommended fingers to use for this line are the index, ring, and pinkie fingers of the fretting hand. Work slowly and don't be tempted to not use the pinkie, it is almost essential to use it to get this piece up to tempo. If you don't use it, it'll never get stronger and you'll be limiting yourself. Take it slow and build up speed.
