So you want to learn some contrapuntal concepts eh? Well, you've come to the right place. First let's begin with a definition of contrapuntal.

contrapuntal - two or more simultaneous, independent lines or voices. Contrapuntal is a matter of degree. Lines or voices may move in contrary-motion for maximum pitch independence, but they may also be rhythmically different. Also known as counterpoint.

Okay...so what is contrary motion?

contrary-motion - part-writing where one voice moves opposite to another.

Now that that's clear lets discuss contrapuntal melodies. Do any come to mind? The example I will be using is an original contrapuntal theme composed by me. To hear how the two melodies work togeather, click the play button. The lower toned melody is much more than a bass line because it is not primarily used to augment the piece, it is part of the piece. The two melodies work in counterpoint. It must be obvious by this point in the lesson that you must use two hands to use counterpoint. Thanks to the tapping technique, counterpoint can be used on something other than a piano.
